This is 40: Clothes Shopping
So my teen wants to shop every day if she could.I used to be like that when I was her age.
Now it's a struggle.
I'm super indecisive, I have no clue about fashion, and I'm short.
Super short, like 5'1 and that's a stretch, short.
Everything I love in fashion is made for 6 foot amazonian women with no waist, boobs, or butt.
I have the no butt thing ROCKED, but the rest, not so much.
I love floor length sun dresses.
I love skinny jeans.
I love boot cut jeans.
NONE of that looks good on a short person.
None.
It just makes you look shorter, and weird-like.
I love a good heel but then my toes go numb and I walk funny and that look is SO 1987.
SIGH.
So I'm strolling the Hollister Co. store, Gap, Forever 21, Old Navy, H&M following teens around and I want to cry.
Where does a short almost 40 year old shop?
Most things don't fit right, or are too young for me. If it fits right, I look 85 instead of 40.
My mom who was with us is in her 60's and has a million times more style than me.
How does that even happen?
She's super hip too.
I mean we walk into Hot Topic and the music blaring on the stereo is a song SHE KNOWS.
I turn around and look to see who's singing and it's GRANDMA.
HOW do you know this song that's playing in this skater/goth/hip/ clothing store?!
Duh, it's "I Got You Babe." my mother tells me.
Okay it's a cover, but wow.
This is 40 huh?!
Clothes don't look good, I'm getting a neck thing my 6 year old likes to call a GOBBLE, and my 60-something mom is cooler than me.
Fab.

That neck thing makes me CRAZY! It's not fair! But I'm gonna argue with you about the skinny jeans. I think they look good on any height, but not any size frame if that makes sense.

They get bulky from the knee down because I'm short and they're too long... maybe I should look into petite sizes?!

I feel ya! I will be 40 in two weeks, have noticed jowls in my profile view (and that crepe paper looking skin forming on my neck) AND I am 5'2". Most things I think look fabulous (on the amazonian model) just make me look pregnant. Oh wait, I'm too old for that.... so, I guess it just makes me look like I'm wearing a mumu.

I wish I had some good advice for you but I am 40 something as well and pretty much have a hard time finding clothes I like. I do get most of my clothes at Kohls.

Maybe the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence. lol
At almost 5'9" I find it so hard to find clothes that fit - waistbands in jackets and dresses are up on my ribcage, pants/jeans are usually too short...unless I buy them in the junior dept, which is a little (ok, a lot lol) strange when you are way over 40.
And sizes in the women's dept start at a size too large (not a problem since last year now that I've gained 10 pounds and no longer need the vanity size 2's that are so hard to find).
Also, you are lucky - you can wear any heels you want! When I was in high school, I hated being tall/skinny and would only wear flat shoes. Now that I am into the minimalist/barefoot type of shoes, I don't really care anymore.
Sorry about rambling so much on your post!
Happy New Year!

I do get you Debby, makes sense that the opposite has similar types of issues. Thanks for posting!

Well I'm almost 56 and stay home most of the time so it's comfy time for me with pajamas.

I would love to shop everyday too and I am almost 30. I cannot stand skinny jeans though. I live more for comfort and not sexiness.

I totally get what you are saying. I am 5'1 on a good day. Not to mention I am carrying a few extra pounds. So skinny jeans are never gonna happen. I always try to shop in the petite department.

I feel your pain and I understand. For me, it's the mid section weight gain that makes it so undesirable to be shopping!!

My daughter is 5'10" and doesn't like being tall because most pants are way too short. Never happy!
Enjoy 40...I wish I were only 40!

Love that grandma recognized the song! I have a hard time shopping for clothes too, even though I'm in my early 20's, having a kid changes your body so much :(

I feel your pain! Other than being short I can totally relate.

I'm a short one, and its hard to find any pants my size.

You know what's funny? I'm 5' 9" and had always hated my height. I hated be taller than all the boys, now me sometimes. For the longest time I wanted to be short and cute. I've now learned to embrace my height a little more and reading your post helps me. Just know that you can totally work the short and cute thing and that some people out there envy you! :)

I love my skinny jeans, they really help to make me look slimmer and taller. Trust me, the older you get, the worse it gets.

I understand. I used to shop in the little girls department and bought the bigger sizes...since 30, I don't even look there anymore

I"m short, too, so I can relate! I pretty much have skinny jeans and clothes that aren't too "busy." I add flair with scarves and jewelry. Once in a while I get something that really isn't as great on a short person. Also, I gave up wearing heels that added inches and inches, and mostly wear flats, so now I am truly short!! You are so cute, and all your pictures you look great!

I'm not laughing (or crying) at you, I am doing it with you. Trust me, a 50 year old, short women with boobs and a pooch that I used to laugh at on my grandmother has now come home to roost on my body. Not to mention that bunions make it impossible to get shoes that look at all fashionable. So I think I'll just stay home...forever. LOL!
