Panties, the New Frontier

So I've said it before, pull-up diapers are the devil. They stink horrendously when wet, they cost the same as diapers but for half the quantity, and they just feel like a diaper. Part of the battle of potty training is that if you do wet yourself, you should be aware of it. Thus, we went for the panty purchase for K.

Of course her first choice were the "WALLOW" ones. She only wears a 2T and the 4's are the smallest size available.

Also I read a post this morning about another potty-training mom whose child soaked the couch cushions, thank you for the head's up!

So here we are at the next phase. All morning the panties stayed dry and we visited the potty 3 times. Nothing. She is very good at control and I'm sure she loaded her diaper up as we readied her for her nap, but baby steps right? I know when she's ready, she'll let us know...we're just helping her along.

And then they're the Potty Whisperer...what do you think about this?

I am going through the fun of potty training at the moment; we have had a couple of 'accidents' on the couch too. He is fine when we are at home and the potty is right there, my question is what do you do when your out and about, do I need to carry a potty on my back?

I think the "potty whisperer" is dead on. When my two were little and being potty trained it didn't take long after I made them start cleaning out their own underwear in the toilet. Not long at all.

Oh geez, whats next? I had to keep it real quiet, but I will listen to it louder later. I'm with you on the pull ups, yuck! They need to know when they are wet IMO

Pull ups are definitely the devil. I had to do a bit of a boot camp on my daughter just because she was so stubborn but it worked. After an intense two days of nothing but potty time all the time, she got it.

Funny how my three children were so completely different when it came to potty training...

The potty whisperer had some interesting advice. Good luck with it! I'm sure she'll catch on soon. :)

Karen my 3 are different too...dd1 was easy...but then had a set back with poopin'. ds was easy with the whole standing like dad...and now dd2 is very stubborn.

Too cute! Sadly, my 2 year old can barely squeeze her cheeks into a 6. And now that she has turned into quite the fashionista she has definite opinions on which pair of panties she wears. I have been very lucky in the potty training department with her. My 4 year old son? Still soaks a diaper at night. Sigh.

Good luck with the potty training! My philosophy was that when they're ready, they're ready. You can't force them - and they are all so different. This Botty Bootcamp Lady is taking it a bit too far. I don't think she is doing anything that a parent could not do on their own.

You know, you've done it 2 times before. You know she'll get there, and with cute panties as a motivator, it may just be sooner than you think!

Thank you for asking about my friend's daughter. She is home from the hospital and doing well. Everyone is a bit shook up and adjusting to the newness of their situation, but they've made it through the toughest part. It means so much to have the well wishes of others - so thanks again from the bottom of my heart. :)

wow, potty training days...thank goodness those days are behind me. my oldest is 21 today..but the younger ones are 11 & 9. with my son, it was sitting him on the potty one time...my daughters a couple of wet undies, but not too much more than that.

ciara from over @ cre8buzz lol

I was a wait until she was absolutely ready sort of mom. It was hard though because she was a few months over three before she trained. BUT she trained in like two days, and it has been smooth sailing from there on out. both night and day trained.

    good luck!

I think that the potty whisperer doesn't have a OCD and probably has a stinky house! I'm so glad we're done-

Jen, Is there a setting that I can change to send comments to my email- I looked, but can't find it.

I think I'm going to have to go the pee-your-pants-and-see-how-you-like-sitting-in-it route, too. The boy won't go on the damn potty for anything.

perfect timing... i've just started to think about C and potty training...

PS - when you have music playing on your site it makes it hard to hear the video :) took me a while to figure out where the music was and how to turn it off.

I think the PW has some great ideas, but I really don't know about cinching the deal in one day. It was a process with both of mine. I think it is crazy to "not ask" because when they are learning-they need reminders. Eventually, they learn to go on their own. Good luck. Miles was a bear to train, and it took four adults and a vacation to make headway.

I haven't started potty training yet! But today my kiddo had a swimmie on and I forgot how bad those are and he leaked on the couch can you say yuck! The orange hat is from the dollar store and grandma bought it he insisted on having it.

Xander has a tiny tush and we went into the baby section at Target and found 2t-4t Underpants, cause all the 4's in the boys section were huge on him.

When potty training my kids, I used training underwear. Thicker than regular underwear (so everything doesn't leak through to, say, your couch), but you're still very aware when you have an accident. Good luck!

When I trained the 3 of the 4 that are trained now (that was confusing lol) I used the Gerber cloth training pants. They have a foam core in the crutch that absorbs a little pee (and we are talking little) but also lets them know they have peed themselves.
I also had a potty in the living room (yep it looked wonderful with two of them in there!) so they could go when they wanted.
You MUST get this video too, I got it from Amazon for like $10 - it is called Potty Power and is FABULOUS!!!!
Sofia was trained in like 2 days, no exaggerating, and Ben in a couple weeks (basic that is).
I am going to start Nate in July and will be putting the video back on with the potty back in the living room, I am hoping her will train relatively fast.

GL, and yay for big girl panties for K!!! :)

When I trained the 3 that are now trained (that was confusing lol) I have always used the Gerber cloth training pants.
They have a foam core at the crutch and absorb a little (and I mean little) bit of pee, but it also lets them know they have peed themselves.

When I was training the twins I also had the potties in the living room, not the best look but it was convenient so they could go when they needed (and it kept them out of the bathroom from playing in there).
I also got this fabulous video from Amazon for like $10 called Potty Power, it is the best video around and really helped the kids.
Sofia was trained in like 2 days (no exaggerating) and Benny about 2 weeks later.

I am going to start Nate mid to late July, I am hoping he will train relatively fast and easily.

Yay for K and her big girl panties, and I hope she trains easily for you Jen!! :)

oh thank goodness I haven't started potty training the twins yet. I figure if they are still in diapers by the time they start school then there's a problem LOL. I can't even remember what I did with my now 12 year old but I certainly do not remember ever buying pull-ups.

I wasn't crazy about the Potty Whisperer's use of junk food. Yeah, technically the salty sweet theory is true but I would have to deal with months of "I want more CHEEEEEEETOS" every time my kid used the potty. UGH. Glad I'm done with that stage!

On the up side - being the third, K should be a little easier, right?

Best of luck to you and the crew!

AND, regarding the leaking on the couch issue...I used to take a flat mattress protector everywhere with me. The couch, friend's floors, grandma's guest bed, etc. Just keep it under the trainee to reduce messiness.

For the record, I never used pull-ups with my guys. I put vinyl mattress protectors under the sheets and if they had an accident we just had to change the sheets. Believe me, it happened many times! I have deep sleepers and there was bed wetting beyond 4 and 5 years old. Eventually the body and mind catch up and all is well!

    Hang Tough Mama!

We're still in potty training mode... relatively finished, but still have the occasional accident.

What I've done to make it easier is to buy the waterproof crib sheets (not the fitted ones) that I used when the girls were still sleeping in the crib - and put them on the couch when they sat there, and under their sheets on their bed. This way if there's an accident I know it's not going to soak through anything - and it's small enough that I can take it and immediately throw it into the washing machine... and then pull out another.

    It works for me. :)

Yuck. I hate pull ups too. I've never put my kids in them for the exact reasons you named. I don't understand the difference between a pull up and a diaper.

And I love her little tush in the wallow ones. Too cute.

OK, all I can think about is having a job where children pee and poop on your kitchen floor all day then you clean and sanitize at 5pm. Can you have family meals in that kitchen? Do you eventually just lose any appetite for food? I have so many questions for the PW.

We potty-trained Beth a couple of months ago. I'm one of those moms who waits until I'm absolutely sure that the kid is ready, so she was a couple months past three before we did it. We bought one pack of pull-ups but only used maybe five. I made her go naked for three or four days, and after that, she had it nailed down! She's had a few accidents since then, most of them at night. It's AWESOME having her out of diapers finally!

I so do not miss the potty training days. Big girl underwear was the only thing that worked for my stubborn daughter. A few pairs of wet underwear and she was swayed over to my way of thinking.

  29. A Crafty Mom said...

LOL now I see where your potty training comment came from :-)

My son David just said one morning "I want to wear underwear like Pete" (his big brother 18 months older). I decided, fine, then that was it. No more diapers, period. We had pee and poop fest then for three days. It sucked royally. I would take him to the potty but he wouldn't go, he'd hide in a corner and poop, whatever. On day four he got sick of being dirty/wet and started whining when he had to go - I would rush him and he'd pee on the potty. Here we are almost 2 weeks later, he is just now telling me he has to go and we run for the potty together.

You guys will get there - don't worry! And I agree about pull ups - what a stupid invention. They're JUST like diapers and very confusing to kids, IMO.

    Amen!
Pull ups are of the devil!
Good luck in your quest to be diaperless!

About PW...hmmmm I am not sure about that. Seems extreme. A lot of nekkid bottoms running around.
In front of strangers. She was helping to clean up an accident on her floor. How many times a day does that happen? The smell must never go away! ugh!
