Not the Thomas Hat
Hubby is like Pavlov's dog when he hears a train whistle in town.He
We don't have a major train station in our small town.
It's not like Amtrak or anything.
Just like an engine, and maybe one car.
But, for them, it's total excitement.
They hang out inside the car and watch the action.
Getting out is too dangerous.
But on occasion, they'll take a penny to the tracks for a quick squish and flattening.
Yesterday My Boy called me at home from the switching yard.
"The train engineer noticed us and gave us a hat!"
Cool dude!
I envisioned one of these...
I thought...well okay, it's cute, for dress up and stuff.
Then I thought, oh man it'll be hubby's train-engineer-phase hat, and he'll start wearing it in public and stuff.
Great. LOL.
There was this hat-phase...

Cute, no?
But that hat reminds me of 2002..bleh.
I was pleasantly surprised K walked in with this....

Oh the beauty of it all!
Baseball hats, we can do in this house!

Laughing at the vision of your man in a Thomas hat! What is it about boys(men) and trains? We have a track close to our house and my men are the same way! No cool hats yet though.

K looks so sweet in the hat!

Oh thank goodness! I cannot imagine you standing next to your hubby in a Thomas hat at the grocery store checkout. LOL

At least it is cheap entertainment, but maybe your town needs a bowling alley.

Oh she looks so cute!!

See, engineers aren't as nerdy as you thought.
June 3, 2009 at 6:47 AM
That's pretty cool that the engineer gave you his hat. All that hanging around the train yard pays off in the end.
My wife's aunt lived about 20 yards from train tracks and you knew when a train was coming since it blew its horn miles before it came through. Always fun to watch them go by.

You can hear the whistle from my house too, but that's as far as we get. My little guy thinks it's too loud, so we wave to trains from the car. Love the hat.

She's so cute in that hat. Hi from the SITstahood.

My brother is a switchman at a lumber yard, switching tracks and coupling and uncoupling train cars. He is fairly new at it and just last week they started teaching him how to drive the locomotive...he's 19 (I was barely driving my own car at 19).
He was telling me the other day about how they were switching cars off the train and had to back up through an intersection (they can block an intersection for 4 minutes). And this guy in a truck was mad at the delay and started yelling and cussing at them and honking his horn. Finally the guy got fed up and turned around and headed for the next intersection down the road so he could cross the tracks. The guy driving the engine turned to my brother with an evil grin and told him to hang on (when switching he hangs on the side of the engine to be able to see up and down the tracks and make sure they are clear). The engine took off for the next intersection (locomotive engines are meant to haul heavy train cars so they can book it when empty cars are coupled up) and just as the guy in the truck approached the other intersection...the railroad crossing guards came down and the train began entering the intersection. They all just smiled and waved at the man in the truck. I think he was less than amused.
Moral of this story...don't mess with the train people 'cause they can ruin your day!

She is just as adorable as can be in that hat.
And what a darling tradition she and her daddy have.

What a cool hat! The firemen always give out little plastic fire hats to kids, and my son loves them. I think he wouldn't know what to do with himself if a train conductor gave him a hat!
June 3, 2009 at 11:32 AM
There's just something about trains!
June 3, 2009 at 1:28 PM
Wow! Is that what train conductors are wearing these days? Not bad! Love your blog!

Your hubby & Bo would get along so well. I love the baseball hat, but he would prefer the Thomas one. Which we have, of course, but it's too small.

She is so stinkin' cute!

That's really cool! And it's sweet that they enjoy that together.
