Cue the Muffin-Top

There's a reason why I don't enjoy clothes shopping!

Last weekend a friend of mine and our older daughters went on a shopping trip. I vowed I was going to shop for myself and not peek into the toddler/boys/men's section. If DQ found something, she could try on and we'll decide on it, sure. But, it's about time I got a few new duds in my closet.

I love Old Navy, they have quality clothes at great prices, so we looked there.

Since when did all the skinny-minnie-college girl clothes get mixed in with the women's stuff?

A size Large looks miniature, I could probably get ONE BOOB in their shirts. Pulling out an XL...I winced a bit, but thought, maybe just maybe.

Strolling around the store I kept looking at the turquoise sweatshirt I had and realized it was a 'crop style.'

Meaning, stops at the middle.

Above the waist.

At the muffin-top.

It's only $8.99 and so soft though. I finally gave up the ghost and bought it.

It's cute right?!

But, what's that black thing in the picture? It doesn't come with the sweatshirt, is it just your basic tee underneath?! I just don't get fashion anymore. And, this is JUST a sweatshirt.

So i'm wearing it today and i've tried to pull on it to make it longer about 20 times. I even have a long shirt underneath, but that just draws attention to the least attractive part of my body.

I knew I shouldn't have bought it. GRR.

Pair this with a pair of low rise jeans and i'll be the Pillsbury Dough Woman! heeheehee!

Gross.

Point me to the Mrs. Roper Muumuu section and I'll be on my way.

I'm never shopping again.

Awwww! You mean you don't 'fit' into the clothes 'they' say we should fit in to? Come stand next to me, hon, you'll look GREAT! lol

I really feel you pain on this. I HATE shopping for clothes... it's like a industry-wide conspiracy against women. *sigh*

Ay, Jen. Unfortunately, there are a few stores that one must leave behind at a certain point in one's life. Old Navy is one of them. So is Arden B., Forever 21, and a ew others. I know, sucks big time. Cute stuff, reasonable prices. No more, sista. At least not for us...

LOL...I did that last year when I bought one of those cute tops that tie under the boobs and "flows" away from the body...only problem is it makes me look pregs...ugh...

I'm laughing right now. Not at you, but at how much you and I are alike.

I'm so fed up with my clothes, but won't go shopping strictly because I can't figure out what someone my age/size/whatever is supposed to wear. Ugh.

I so feel your pain. I am going with the maternity wear to hide all my flaws... It's in, ya know!

LOL -- and that's why I haven't really shopped n about two years. Apparently, according to the clothing stores, all women are really junior high girls.

  8. kel said...

You and I should go shopping together! lol..

I hate when they have super cute t-shirts and you unfold them and they are freaking tiny.. and they are size xl. I know they are suppossed to tight.. but really, if you're wearing an xl.. do you really want it tight??

And who the hell wants a cropped sweatshirt? really..aren't they supposed to be comfy and warm?

I am sure its much cuter than you are giving it credit for!

I am sure you still look cute, cause you are adorable no matter what you wear.I don't go to old navy hardly at all because they used to have a plus size section and now they don't hello? what up with that?

I understand, sister. If you are a size 10 or more, fashion is a full time job!

Ugh - I went shopping yesterday looking for pants - bleh! The one kind I wanted to buy - women's 501 jeans are DISCONTINUED! I was so annoyed - thought I could internet shop, but nope! Got a pair of Uggs and a pair of Fat Baby boots instead!

I have noticed a big difference in Old Navy clothes lately. They are gearing more towards the teens than the women now. I hate it!!!!!

  18. Ali said...

LOL! And they always look so good on the mannequins! But then those mannequins never have to bend over to pick up toddlers or get down on the floor to tie shoes!

Too funny! I feel the same way about shopping at Old Navy. Seems each year the styles get "slinkier!" LOL

  24. Allison said...

Yeah the muffin top is an evil evil thing! Especially right after a c-section that takes all the effort I put into having some sort of a stomach! Oh and the jeans now hit right where my scar is... not a pretty picture!

Old Navy is pretty much the only place I get my clothes from since they fit me so good. However I would not have gotten the crop sweatshirt because that would be living on the edge for me and well I got a nice muffin top myself. I have to be selective on their shirt because they either make me look like I got a uniboob because is squishes them or my boobs are overflowing the top because it cuts them in half.

Jen you are funny, we are so much alike. We could probably be such good real life friends but because we are so shy we would probably never approach each other LOL

  26. Danielle (Life with the Hewitt Family) said...

I really don't understand the clothes that are out right now...they are either way too form fitting or way too loose. Everytime I see those shirts with the long fabric on the arms or the really wide sleeves I automatically think of myself burning in flames from the shirt catching on fire from the stove.

  27. Amy said...

I feel the same way. I love to shop, but it's depressing now. I have a slight muffin top, big boobs and skinny legs. Hmmm!

Here is a link for you. It is titled "How to Prevent Muffin Top in Fashion. Ha ha. http://www.goodsearch.com/Search.aspx?Keywords=muffin+top+

A long time ago I saw these ladies that invented a muffin top hider that was basically the body of a t-shirt that covers from below the bra to the pants. I'll keep Googling and let you know.

This is why I don't own any new clothes. I hate shopping for myself and never find anything that fits.

And, apparently, up until 2 days ago, hubby didn't know what a muffin top was until I referred to mine.

I hope it goes away soon! Pants are soooo snug.

  34. Mommy In Pink said...

Awww..I totally know how you feel...ever since getting "my silicone parts" I cannot find shirts that fit right. It's really bad now that I'm nursing..everything makes me look fat or just does not feel right!

  35. Shannon said...

Old Navy is one of my favorite stores... but I've had some hit or misses from their, too.

My hubby thinks I am weird for doing this... but when I find something that fits and looks good, I will buy it in just about every color they have.

So I have the same top but in 3 or 4 different colors. Or the same corduroy pants in both black and khaki.

Awwww I feel for you I hate shopping too!!!

  37. amy (metz) walker said...

HILARIOUS! I'm so with you...but my particular fashion issue is with the skinny jean. What seven year old created THAT style. I've got thighs, here!

  38. Clare said...

clothes shopping is the worst, it is so hard to find stuff that i like. i tried on about four sweaters at target yesterday. they were shedding all over the place, i was like a puff ball. i decided against all of them, because i knew they would drive me nuts! so i bought just one sweater i loved at ann taylor, $60 but it doesn't shed everywhere!

  39. Unknown said...

I had to stop shopping there three kids ago. :( I feel your pain!

The evil clothing designers need to focus on us and understand we need cute, relaxed clothing items somewhere between tiny-teen clothes and large Chico-style clothes!

Yesterday afternoon I took a walk with the kids and caught a glimpse of my shadow. When you notice that your SHADOW needs to lay off the carbs, then it's seriously time to take a good look at your diet! I'm looking! I'm looking!

  44. Unknown said...

Yeah, clothes shopping sucks! I went to Old Navy & got the "flirt" jeans. Way too much batter for that muffin tin!!! And do not buy the ribbed t-necks all sizes are skin tight!!!

  45. Evolving Mommy Catherine said...

Shopping, ugh! What a pain! rarely do I find something at a reasonable price that actually fits right and I like!

This goes right along with my butter and cheese blog post!

  47. Patrice said...

LOL! You crack me up! I so feel your pain, though! It's miserable, isn't it?! At least the vector you looks especially hot, now!

  48. Barbara said...

Haha. Not to worry. The muffin top is universal and it doesn't have to define you!! The most important thing to remember is comfort. If its not comfortable, then it isn't the right style for you. Doesn't mean there is anything wrong with you... its the style, NOT YOU.

If you really do like Old Navy, try to Sweetheart Jean, which is a mid rise cut. Low rise is not out friend unfortunately, not unless ya wanna be pullin' and tuggin' at it all damn, kinda like that hoodie =). You can do the hoodie, just remember that its cropped, so STOP PULLIN' AT IT LADY!!!

    1. Try the jean on
    2. Put on your favorite shirt
    3. Put on the hoodie

    Voila... Comfort!

  49. Barbara said...

LOVING the new header! So cute. How'd you do that?!?

I hear ya sister, on the shopping. I'm not a teeny girl, so it's always a nightmare for me when XXL is now XXS. Truly. Been to American Eagle lately? Wait, don't go. It's too depressing.

  52. Jenni said...

Old Navy is really hit or miss for me. Either I go in and see lots of terrific things that fit well or I go in and everything looks like you would have to be a 14 year old girl with no hips to wear.

  53. Leanne said...

I got the same problem. I was thinking of just starting to go naked but it's getting too cold. Sigh.

  54. Kristy said...

Love youre new header and I definitely feel your pain with the muffin top!

i hate clothes shopping. the sweetheart cut seems to cover my muffin top well enough.

  59. Unknown said...

I hate shopping of any sort!!! Espically for clothes! UGH! My boobs are either to big for a large or an xl just hangs off of me! LOL I gave up on shopping years ago!!

  60. Anonymous said...

Jen, listen to me, if there is one thing I know it is that MOMS CAN'T GO TO OLD NAVY. Its a fluke if something works. That place nearly had me in therapy when I went in one day found and amazing pair of shorts, in a SIZE 2!!! I go back to buy every other color and the only one left in the color I wanted that fit was a SIZE 10?! Do you understand how I was ready to jump the ledge? Go quality, mommy safe shopping: Ann Taylor Loft, Banana Republic, etc.

  61. MamaJoss said...

Hahahaha! What to buy if you have a whole-loaf-of-bread TOP???

  62. Rachel said...

    I'll be back!

  63. Dreyer Drama said...

I am right there with ya! It's so depressing shopping anymore I HATE it! I just want to know who is really a size 2?

  64. jen aka mommay said...

Love the new layout and the "vector you" lol.

Yea, I've been on the search for a cute sweater to wear with jeans. The XL's are just too clingy and look awful. Went to Old Navy last night and found nothing. And I was good and didn't buy yet another of my staple...the vneck tee. Where's Stacey & Clinton when you need them?

  65. jmt said...

This is so hilarious I read it to my hubby. LOL Not funny for you....but.... you know what I mean! So sorry about the jacket! I never buy anything that stops at the middle anymore, I like low-rise too much so the shirts gotta be long!

  66. The Buntens said...

I have one word for you. ;)

    Spanx.

Seriously - you will never have a muffin top again.

I also went and found some very "tight around the tummy" tank tops that suck in that area.

They are less confining than Spanx, but not as good at tucking it all in.

  67. Jill said...

I will admit that I do prefer lower cut jeans - where they sit just above the pubic line. They're more comfortable on me and I don't look as hippy.

However, I do look like a total muffin top as my 35 year old metabolism is totally catching up with me.

I need to purchase some spanx... and A-line tops!

  68. Diva Ma @ Mommy Fabulous said...

Whoo Hooo! I'm with ya and I so desperately need a support group for this problem. I so hate shopping because every thing seems to have shrunk! Did the sizes change? And I have a short sweatshirt like that. Hmmmm not flattering when you have the gut I do, butyou know what? I wear it anyway..... with a shirt of course.

  69. S Club Mama said...

The last...well, almost every time I go shopping, I end up crying. Yeah.

Ok so why would they make a crop sweatshirt? Doesn't your stomach get cold, too? I mean, I'm only 22 but I don't get that. At all.
It's as stupid as low rise jeans. Stupid. And maybe I'm biased against them due to my giant muffin top (you know like those giant muffin tins?)
