Hubby's Turn With the Police

It was a dark and stormy balmy 77 degrees night. The sky was sparkling with millions of stars.

We decided to take a country cruise, find a stargazing spot away from the suburban street lights, and enjoy the beautiful night. The long windy roads were desolate. Hubby drove slowly, taking in the darkness around us. We found a good spot to pull over.

Immediately after shutting off our car lights the red, white, and blue strobes filled our dark car. The sheriff had pulled in behind us.

The kids started crying, "what's happening, why are we in trouble?? we want to go home," they whined in unison.

THEN, Hubby, grabbing his pair, decided to GET OUT OF THE CAR and walk over to the patrol SUV!!

What the hell is he doing, you don't get out of the car. I feared the sheriff had his hand on his gun ready to shoot my oh-so-stupid brave husband.

The kids were freaking out in the back.

Stupid stars.

It felt like we sat there for hours, but only a few minutes later my didn't-get-shot Hubby walked back to the car and got in. His wallet was out and open.

Me--WHAT were you thinking getting out of the car?!
Hubby--I just went and told him what we were doing. He thought we were POACHERS.
Me--I don't even know what that is.
Hubby--Hunting without a license.
Me--Huh?! Oh is THAT what's in the Target bags in the back? You're just lucky he didn't pull his gun out. Don't EVER get out of the car!
Hubby--He saw our addy and asked if we knew M.S. (our ex-sheriff neighbor).
Me--Oh good, now you're friends, let's get the crap out of here.

Then the sheriff walked up to the car shining his flashlight into the windows in the back, at the kids in the middle row, and finally at us in the front. He rambled a bit about what kind of people they're looking for this time of night (8:45pm) and that we should be careful not to jump any fences on private property.

Like we would. I was wearing a skirt.

The sheriff left and the kids were still whining to go home. Hubby insisted we get out and enjoy the stars like our initial intention otherwise we'd look suspicious. We took a 10 second peek and the kids and I both said, "let's go!"

At least I wasn't climbing any seats this time. Sheesh.

    ACK! Hubby! Jeez.

How scary. I'm sure the kids were freaked. I would've been too. Glad nothing came of it, I can't quite see your Hubs getting in trouble with the cops...unless, ya know, you were back in my area climbing over seats together again ;)

Well, at least you can't say it was a boring night...

(One excitement you could've done without though, I'm sure.) Phew.

Oh man, I would've freaked out. Especially with DH getting out of the car. Glad he didn't get shot, or hauled of the jail. ;o)

    Funny story!
Sounds like the police in your town are really on top of things.
Sorry you didn't get to enjoy the stars.

I totally agree with your sentiments - what possessed him to get out of the car???? I guess he got his "machoness" out for the week! :-)

You know what's funny, if you HAD been doing something wrong hubby would not have gotten out of the car but just b/c you weren't doing something wrong, he did. Isn't that weird?

At least the kids were with you so it did look like a nice family outing! He probably would have thought something else if it was just your husband and a hot mama in a skirt:)

That is funny! I can't believe he got out of the car! My husband freaked one time I got pulled over and started looking for my insurance card in the glove comp. He was yelling, "put your hands on the wheel, he's going to think you are reaching for a gun." Yeah, mommy in the mini-van, grabbing a gun!

    OMG how ridiculous!!
Nice way to freak the kids out for the night, what a nit wit the sheriff was.

Sorry your night of fun was ruined, but glad you did not get a ticket or anything.

Oh my goodness! I would have been so upset. I've always wondered what would happen to someone who got out of the car.

Hope the kids are ok now.

I'm laughing and crying as I read this. I had a terrible dream last night about a similar situation but it didn't have a happy ending.
    Dreams... weird...
    Glad everything worked out o.k.
My husband's the opposite. He's always telling me that if I ever get pulled over, do not even reach for my registration until they ask me to. (And that's because my 1 ticket in 20 years of driving leaves him so worried about this happening.)

that was LOL funny! i would have flipped on my hub!

Isn't it crazy that we have to be so scared of cops these days??? Hope you were able to enjoy the stars, even if for only 10 seconds.

Also... good to see you on Beautiful, Fabulous!

Shortly after we had a shooting of some law enforcement officers near us my brother was pulled over with his wife and proceeded to start to get out of the car to talk to the officer -- hello....how dumb. I'm amazed he wasn't gunned down. The cops around here were totally on alert and spazzed out.

    Duh, men!

  30. Tena said...

BUSTED!! That cop was ready to take your family of 5 down town! Book em sheriff! Sorry your evening got rained on!

At the start of your story it sounded like you and hubby were out looking for one of those "top of the world" type places. Then you mentioned the kids in the backseat. And of course the cops. A top of the world type place would have been much more fun! :)

I read this the other night, and them my computer froze, and I thought I commented but I didn't. sigh...

this post had me giggling...because you sound sooooo like me. :)

  33. mom3crazygirls said...

that kind of stuff is supposed to happen on our girls' weekend, not to a star gazing family! You mean you weren't poaching eggs?!?!

  34. Elizabeth Channel said...

That is completely funny! Still, a good experience for your children in a certain way.

Reminds me of the last time my husband got pulled over. Speeding home with colicky infant screaming like a banshee in the back seat. The officer took one look in the back, nodded sympathetically to us, and suggested we get the child home.

Which is what we were trying to do!

OMG- I was taught: Interior light on, hands out the window holding keys. Too funny. Or scary. :P

  36. JenEverAfter said...

Well, at least you have a legitimate "the cops are going to get you" if they're acting up in the backseat!
So glad hubby wasn't shot. What the heck?

    Lol, you are too funny!

Jen, you crack me up! I had no idea where this one was going - at first I thought this was a romantic outing and the cop was pulling you over for what you might be doing!!! HA!

I cannot believe your hubby got out of the car!!! And the cop should have been apologizing to you and your kids for freaking them out!

Oh, I love to hear about your adventures!

  39. Robyn said...

That is hilarious! I can just imagine that happening! LOL Thanks for posting! I got a good laugh out of your misery. LOL
