He Goes to the "Gym"
Remember, I'm a people watcher. While waiting for our lanes at the bowling alley on campus last weekend, we hung around and watched all the kids/college students hang out in the arcade.
I was fascinated by this guy who was working one of those Wii-type dancing machines.
He totally was rocking the steps, I couldn't even keep up with what color was where, but he looked like he's been doing this a while.
DQ, the dancer, even was impressed by this guys fancy footwork.
Wow, I thought, this guy probably tells his parents/friends/girlfriend? that he works out in the gym every day. All the while he feeds the arcade machine quarter after quarter, rocking out to some anime-style rock videos. Nonetheless, it's a fab workout.
At one point the game ends with a big "FAIL" on the screen and he pouts off to the soda machine for a drink, dripping with sweat. Only to come back 10 minutes later for his revenge.
The next two songs, aced, he get's A's for his effort and apparently proud of himself, he leaves.
Gym membership, $250. Arcade dance-machine workout, $2.50. Blog fodder for The Mom, priceless.
I'm totally jealous, he lost like 10 pounds just dancing while I gained about that much watching.

Love the new blog look! ;)
I need something like this at home. Looks like fun!
And I'm thinking, your wartermark, on the back of his shirt, makes a great print for a t-shirt. lol
October 14, 2008 at 4:11 AM
LOL_ I love how it looks like he's sporting a Cheaper Than Therapy T-shirt!!
October 14, 2008 at 5:07 AM
Hey! You changed the look of your blog around a bit.
October 14, 2008 at 5:18 AM
I want a WII for xmas!!!!!
October 14, 2008 at 5:23 AM
My youth is filled with such obsessions that I now look back on and think, "Oh, I miss a time when Ms. Pac-man was the most important woman in my life..."
Then I realize what I am saying, and the feeling of PATHETIC EMBARRASSMENT washes over me...
Note that MY obsessions has nothing to do with physical fitness.
October 14, 2008 at 5:24 AM
That's awesome! I'm always telling myself I'll get the home version of that game and it'll be my key to a slimmmer, trimmer self... yeah, right. :)
October 14, 2008 at 5:37 AM
Too funny! Some of those guys are really good at this stuff! I need to get one! Seriously. I'm with you. WHo needs a fancy shmancy gym membership when you can dance your butt off!
October 14, 2008 at 5:45 AM
that is my son's aerobic exercise...I encourage it since he isn't into any other "real" sport except golf. when you get to his level you come out looking like you have run 5 miles... great gift for DQ...seriously! Oh, and the Hannah Montana sing a long! {{covers ears}}
October 14, 2008 at 6:03 AM
Have you ever tried it? It is so much fun! And you do get up a pretty good sweat. Some of those guys are seriously devoted to it. It is funny to watch.
October 14, 2008 at 6:04 AM
so, that's what I need to do.. start hanging out at the arcade!!!
October 14, 2008 at 6:04 AM
I would have gained too, those bowling alley nachos do me in every time!
October 14, 2008 at 6:11 AM
It was pretty amusing to watch my step daughters try this type of machine out for the 1st time - even on the super slow mode they were having a hard time (and I didn't even try!)
October 14, 2008 at 6:17 AM
I can watch that freakin' machine for hours at the arcade. Fun!!!!
October 14, 2008 at 6:22 AM
That is so priceless. I love that he came back for revenge. I am more into the "Deal or No Deal" arcade games, where you sit on your butt and win tickets to cash in on sweet prizes- like candy necklaces.
October 14, 2008 at 6:22 AM
I always wanted to try DDR- but I have NO coordination and would fall flat on my face, haha
October 14, 2008 at 6:27 AM
That's cool!! You know how many times I've wanted to hop on one of those and try it out??? MANY. They look so fun :-) But I'm a wimp in public so I haven't done it yet!
October 14, 2008 at 6:45 AM
thats great! I wish that I had the energy to sit there and watch him 'dance'. I would be too embarrassed to do that by myself!
October 14, 2008 at 7:20 AM
those machines are awesome! i just can't swing it, hahaha! but yes you are right about it being priceless!
October 14, 2008 at 7:30 AM
LOL! You crack me up! My little brother would do that before he joined the Air Force...where they have mandatory work outs during the week. His workout consisted of Dance Dance Revolution for 2 hours every day! I'm not coordinated enough to do that mess! :)
October 14, 2008 at 7:53 AM
Oh man I tried that one day and I totally sucked!
October 14, 2008 at 8:14 AM
I have tried those games and failed, usually before it really even starts.
October 14, 2008 at 8:39 AM
I would break my neck on one of them contraptions PLUS if it even remotely resembles exercise then it's the debbil!
October 14, 2008 at 8:50 AM
LOL...that is soo my kind of workout...I just got the best one of recent by doing boxing on the wii with my DH ...oh and the bonus, I kicked his butt 3 times...lol.
October 14, 2008 at 9:25 AM
those games are harder than they look. of course he lost 10 lbs he's a guy! it would take a woman a month of those days to lose 10 lbs!
October 14, 2008 at 9:27 AM
This is classic! People who play these games are serious!! Like they are hoping it becomes an Olympic Sport, and well it just might!!
I would have gained too, nacho's, popcorn, beer... bowling alleys pump you full of cramp food, so gross but oh so good!!
October 14, 2008 at 10:23 AM
Oh I have teh playstation version and it is fun. But my boobs (read it as full of fat) jiggle and that is not fun when I am trying to excerise!
October 14, 2008 at 11:01 AM
Sober I suck at that... Alcohol enhanced I rock that game LOL!
I wrote my blog before going to the doctors and was going to tag everyone when I got back... you beat me to the punch HA HA! And Your very welcome!
October 14, 2008 at 11:28 AM
I had an autistic student who rocked out at dance, dance, revolution. He was seriously ranked nationwide. Who knew!?!?
October 14, 2008 at 12:06 PM
Don't you love getting free blog fodder?
By the way, I still haven't decided whether I should be hurt or flattered that you called me JILL on my own blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
October 14, 2008 at 1:32 PM
Not only would I FAIL, I would probably break my leg too!
Smart idea though.`1
October 14, 2008 at 4:03 PM
I read an article in People when I was at the dentist last month about a couple who loved doing this so much that they both lost a bunch of weight, got engaged, and now bought one of the giant arcade machines for their basement. They both work out on it every day and they look fantastic!
October 14, 2008 at 4:53 PM
I'm so getting a Wii. I want to lose 10 pounds dancing!
I love the blog logo on his tee-shirt, by the way!
You sneaky little minx!
October 14, 2008 at 5:09 PM
LMARSEO!!!
I think that is much more fun than going to a boring old stuffy gym!!!
October 14, 2008 at 5:54 PM
I tried one of those at the boardwalk this summer, and I crowd gathered!! I think they thought they were going to see some great performance. I TOTALLY sucked. So embarrassing.
October 14, 2008 at 6:56 PM
I want one for my house, i am too jiggly to dance like that out in public!
October 14, 2008 at 7:09 PM
I like the new blog colors.
October 14, 2008 at 7:12 PM
I have ALWAYS wanted to try that game out but I am afraid people will point and stare and post about me on their blog... ;-D
October 14, 2008 at 10:47 PM
See, no more couch potatoes in the gaming world!
October 15, 2008 at 3:52 PM
lol Don't the kids just go nuts on those things? My 8 year old and I did this together one time and I think she did better than I did! I've seen some teens totally take those dance games on and not even miss a beat! It's crazy!
October 15, 2008 at 7:33 PM
I love watching people dance/ play this game. I always wanted to play but haven't had the nerve to do so for the simple fact that it draws a crowd.
October 15, 2008 at 8:24 PM
I can't help but laugh my ass off every time I see some fool, wait...excuse me...someone playing his game, in public. But you are right! Much cheaper than an unused gym membership! LOL
October 16, 2008 at 10:23 AM
Where can I get me one of those?
Machines that is.
October 21, 2008 at 6:55 PM
I LOVE DDR! (Dance Dance Revolution, not sure if that's the exact game he was playing there, but it sure looks similar!) I'm pretty bad at it, but if I practice enough, I can get really good at the easier songs ;) It's totally fun-and yes, an incredible workout! I get super sweaty whenever I try it.
Saw a MASTER of DDR once in Santa Monica (on the pier) one summer...we stood and watched in awe for probably 30 minutes. He won every game with flying colors and made it look so easy! It was incredible.
