He Goes to the "Gym"

Remember, I'm a people watcher.

While waiting for our lanes at the bowling alley on campus last weekend, we hung around and watched all the kids/college students hang out in the arcade.

I was fascinated by this guy who was working one of those Wii-type dancing machines.

He totally was rocking the steps, I couldn't even keep up with what color was where, but he looked like he's been doing this a while.

DQ, the dancer, even was impressed by this guys fancy footwork.

Wow, I thought, this guy probably tells his parents/friends/girlfriend? that he works out in the gym every day. All the while he feeds the arcade machine quarter after quarter, rocking out to some anime-style rock videos. Nonetheless, it's a fab workout.

At one point the game ends with a big "FAIL" on the screen and he pouts off to the soda machine for a drink, dripping with sweat. Only to come back 10 minutes later for his revenge.

The next two songs, aced, he get's A's for his effort and apparently proud of himself, he leaves.

Gym membership, $250. Arcade dance-machine workout, $2.50. Blog fodder for The Mom, priceless.

I'm totally jealous, he lost like 10 pounds just dancing while I gained about that much watching.

I need something like this at home. Looks like fun!

And I'm thinking, your wartermark, on the back of his shirt, makes a great print for a t-shirt. lol

My youth is filled with such obsessions that I now look back on and think, "Oh, I miss a time when Ms. Pac-man was the most important woman in my life..."

Then I realize what I am saying, and the feeling of PATHETIC EMBARRASSMENT washes over me...

Note that MY obsessions has nothing to do with physical fitness.

That's awesome! I'm always telling myself I'll get the home version of that game and it'll be my key to a slimmmer, trimmer self... yeah, right. :)

Too funny! Some of those guys are really good at this stuff! I need to get one! Seriously. I'm with you. WHo needs a fancy shmancy gym membership when you can dance your butt off!

    that is my son's aerobic exercise...I encourage it since he isn't into any other "real" sport except golf. when you get to his level you come out looking like you have run 5 miles... great gift for DQ...seriously! Oh, and the Hannah Montana sing a long! {{covers ears}}

It was pretty amusing to watch my step daughters try this type of machine out for the 1st time - even on the super slow mode they were having a hard time (and I didn't even try!)

I can watch that freakin' machine for hours at the arcade. Fun!!!!

That is so priceless. I love that he came back for revenge. I am more into the "Deal or No Deal" arcade games, where you sit on your butt and win tickets to cash in on sweet prizes- like candy necklaces.

LOL! You crack me up! My little brother would do that before he joined the Air Force...where they have mandatory work outs during the week. His workout consisted of Dance Dance Revolution for 2 hours every day! I'm not coordinated enough to do that mess! :)

I read an article in People when I was at the dentist last month about a couple who loved doing this so much that they both lost a bunch of weight, got engaged, and now bought one of the giant arcade machines for their basement. They both work out on it every day and they look fantastic!

lol Don't the kids just go nuts on those things? My 8 year old and I did this together one time and I think she did better than I did! I've seen some teens totally take those dance games on and not even miss a beat! It's crazy!

I love watching people dance/ play this game. I always wanted to play but haven't had the nerve to do so for the simple fact that it draws a crowd.

  42. Aubrey said...

I can't help but laugh my ass off every time I see some fool, wait...excuse me...someone playing his game, in public. But you are right! Much cheaper than an unused gym membership! LOL

  43. Wendi said...

Where can I get me one of those?
    Machines that is.

I LOVE DDR! (Dance Dance Revolution, not sure if that's the exact game he was playing there, but it sure looks similar!) I'm pretty bad at it, but if I practice enough, I can get really good at the easier songs ;) It's totally fun-and yes, an incredible workout! I get super sweaty whenever I try it.

Saw a MASTER of DDR once in Santa Monica (on the pier) one summer...we stood and watched in awe for probably 30 minutes. He won every game with flying colors and made it look so easy! It was incredible.
