Love is... a Mixed Tape 2.0

I'm bringing back a post from my early blogging days, *last published April, 6, 2008*

Hubby is romantic, in his own way.

When we met in college, he had a unique-ness about him.

He was kind of a sloppy eater in the dining commons. He liked to tease my friends who I bunked with in the dorms.

And, it was cute how he assumed since my hometown was near his, I would be more than happy to have him accompany me in a ride home. It was my duty, after all, as a cute stranger.

One night when we were going to go out to dinner I remember coming back from a class to find a post-it on my door.

"There are some pretty good lookin' steaks bbq-ing on the grills outside the D.C., can we postpone our date and head down there tonight?"

I didn't mind, he was very sweet and his relaxed demeanor grew on me. Cute too, but I'm not gonna get all mushy. I wanna make sure you can hold on to your lunch!

It may be that this next tidbit about him is the VERY reason he and I got together...the reason we fell in love and are together still, after 17 years (12.5 married).

2 words. MIXED TAPE.

I don't believe I was ever given a mixed tape before. It must have taken a lot of thought (or not) to get every song on there just right.

I wonder if the words to the songs swayed him in any way. Hubby likes music for it's instrumental 'coolness' rather than the words. He always says the words often ruin the song....so back then I was probably looking too much into the choices he made.

But, maybe he actually channelled his inner romantic. That's what I like to think.

The tapes were much more romantic than the gas cap he gave me for my 19th birthday.

My VW Rabbit convertible was very impressed, I on the other hand, thought it was a bad joke and that he really didn't like me at all!

The one tape that I remember most was labeled JSICUWYIM. An acronym for "Just Something I Cooked Up With You In Mind."

I'll give you a minute to grab a tissue.

Songs we remember on it were..

D'yer Mak'er-Led Zepplin
Rocky Mountain Way-Joe Walsh
What It Takes-Aerosmith
Show Me the Way-Peter Frampton
All Right Now-Free
Nothing Else Matters-Metallica
I Want You to Want Me-Cheap Trick

Metallica-pure romance baby!

Although he never did the Say Anything routine outside my bedroom window, blasting Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" on his boom box, I still fell for him.

He was original.

Still is!

I was wondering if you were familiar with the movie, but you quoted it in the end.

My wife and I are 16 years apart so our musical tastes span many years. I am filling her in on those years when she was raising her kids and not listening to the radio, and she fills me in on those years when her kids listened to the radio and I didn't.

    Great tribute!

Isn't it funny looking back and thinking, or knowing what did it for you. Who would have thought that mixed tape would seal the deal for you. For me, it was a piece string that tied down my trunk. I was smitten.

I love it! How sweet! I was so lucky to meet my man at a very young age- he's done a few cute things like that and I fell for them, too!! 20 years later and he's still a keeper!! Thanks for stopping by Creative and Curious Kids! I am jealous of your weather, although building the snow princess was fun. I changed the rules for people who don't have snow. They can make a snowperson craft to enter my contest!! Have a great day in that Awesome 70 degrees weather!

Oh, the mixed tape. Do kids do that anymore with CDs? I just recently got rid of a 20 year old mix tape that was from a highschool freshman boyfriend! SO funny....

this is ADORABLE! while i may not be swept away, my husband is packing his suitcase right now, headed in your husband's direction... ready to propose!

  31. Heidi said...

I totally get it. I just think that I would rather have an amazing husband that loves me and our children over having a guy who can smooth talk me & buy the best gifts. I love when they feel comfortable enough to just be themselves... even if it urks me sometimes.

Oh freakin heck yeah!!! I love mixed muzak!!! Specially in elevators. I'm weird like that. Who needs an I POD right?

    Oh and ...

You're so awesome you got an award from me ... don't hate me because i loff ya!!!

"A mixed tape...he made me a mixed tape...he was thinking of me...which shows he CAAAAARES!" (Mixed tape - Avenue Q soundtrack)

How sweet!! It's funny how it's the little things that draw us in...and hook us before we can escape ;) Seriously...very sweet. And I am of the belief that Metallica is VERY romantic...It's played a part in several of my relationships (including getting pregnant with my first child after going to one of their concerts...but I digress).

    Beautiful post!!

That is sooo sweet. Mixed tapes were so hard to get right bakc in the day. I remember a friend making me one and I agonized over the lyrics thinking if that meant that he "liked me".
