Land of the Misfit Clothes
It was a beautiful 75 degree evening and after dinner we decided to take a stroll. We walked to the school and as we approached I noticed something...rather some thingS.
The kids promptly took to the playground and I walked closer to the items strewn about the blacktop.
I kid you not, I found...
6 sweatshirts
1 shirt
1 pair of sweats
1 jacket
2 lunch pails
1 shoe
1 sock
and get this...a broken bottle of medication with a student's name I recognize on it.
Um. Yeah.
How do you NOT know that you're missing a shoe!?
Why aren't medications stored in the office, let alone being carried around by a child?
I also asked DQ if any of her classmates return after recess half-naked!!
Don't answer that.
But, seriously. I would have collected the stuff and hauled it to the lost and found bin, but the school's locked up weekends.
Some of this stuff looked near new.
As I continued to look around, I was preparing my speech if I would have found a familiar piece of clothing.
Luckily I did not need to preach.
Is it always like this or did I just hit the school-yard-sale lottery?!

seriously. and none of the teachers realize that there is a missing shoe from a students foot?

My mother's favorite admonishment - other than "Chew with your goddamn mouth shut, will ya? We got our own food to enjoy, you know?" - while I was growing up was "What the hell do you do do with your clothes, spread them around the friggin' neighborhood?!" (Mom was and still is colorfully linguistic)
This list proves she was not as far gone in the head as we thought...

It always amazed me the amount of clothing that would be on the lost and found racks at Tara's elementary school... the one thing that she lost in her 5 years at that school though, never was found! I guess someone else like her brand new Disney sweatshirt!
The bottle of medication, now that is just not right.

Maybe it was a yard sale. That is amazing, but you would probably find the same thing at so many other playgrounds.
'return to class half-naked'... that's funny.

LOL o my goodness a bottle of medicine and all of those clothes! Gesh!
May 18, 2009 at 6:44 AM
Come on! What were the teachers doing when all of this stuff was left outside? A shoe? How do you not notice that one of your students is walking down the hall without his shoe or his pants??? LOL!

It is always like that! I am disgusted and perplexed by our Lost and Found bin. This year I bought a laundry basket so when I take the kids out to recess and they're done eating or get hot and want to disrobe they just put the items in the tub. I think my class has only lost 5 items max, and they honestly will admit they didn't put their items in the basket. Any other teachers reading this...buy a basket for your students to put their things in during breaks.

so funny! i can't believe the teachers didn't see all of that stuff! crazy;)

Looks like a case of finders keepers to me!

@ our school a kid could be suspended for taking a tylenol to school!
My kids are the ones leaving things...drive me crazy!
Hope you had a great weekend ")

I love the way the way you deliver your experiences! You crack me up!

honestly, I think its always like this... my little one is too little to leave stuff behind because I am always on top of him, but he would if I wasn't paying attention (especially shoes and socks). And I have a much younger brother (21 years) and my mother is always telling me how he lost his beach towel, goggles, one flip flop, etc...

I don't know how you "lose" a shoe either...My four year ran up to me the other night at a baseball game crying saying she had lost her shoe. "um why didn't you turn around and pick it up when it came off????" Luckily we found it but seriously how do you lose a shoe!
May 18, 2009 at 11:47 AM
The lost and found at school has so much stuff in it. I can't believe you found that stuff just on the playground.
May 18, 2009 at 12:23 PM
Wow, you DID hit the school yard clothing jack pot! I agree - how could someone NOT notice those items are missing???? Beats the heck outta me!
May 18, 2009 at 12:57 PM
It is ALWAYS like that. I cannot even keep track of how many times my kids have come home missing something and I have just wanted to scream because how do you forget your entire backpack?! IT IS SCHOOL! And yes, he has lost a shoe before. I don't know....This makes me happy that it is not just me. Phew!

My youngest kid has "lost" a few items that he deemed ugly from the start. Convenient. His older brothers were much better at keeping track of their things...of course I think they were also more afraid of Mama's wrath, lol. I must be losing my touch.
The medication thing is not cool tho, I hope the contents didn't wind up in the wrong hands! Eeek.

You would not BELIEVE the crap in our lost and found. We could outfit a small country...
May 18, 2009 at 3:00 PM
Sweats? As in pants? Alright who was the kid to went back to class in his undies?
May 18, 2009 at 6:29 PM
Yikes...tons of teacher blasting here. People do realize these playgrounds are open to the public during the evenings and weekends. Better question is how do the parents not realize a shoe is missing.
May 18, 2009 at 6:52 PM
I have to say ... I see single shoes so often on the side of the road that I started counting them ... last year ... I counted 274 of them ... separate! I kid you not! In addition ... the other day ... driving ... there was an inflatable teddy bear sitting on the side of the highway ... happily watching the cars drive by.
Strange.

Hey we were at a county park this past week-end and my son happened upon a pair of purple panties laying in the sand! I was so hoping no questions would be asked! I lucked out!

I know what my TWT pic is going to be next week; the Lost and Found table at my school. Must be a thousand dollars worth of stuff there right now... Thanks for the idea! :)
