Tales of a New Soccer Mom

Soccer's Moms Log.

Day 1.

I don't like it.

Okay so it's weird.

It's different.

I'm not used to it.

I'm a baseball mom.

I'm a dance mom.

I don't even know the rules of soccer other than kick the ball into the goal.

New things scare me.

We tookMy Boy to meet his coach and team tonight.

All the boys have played before.

It was MB's first time.

He had his arms crossed across his chest the whole time.

Hubby said it was his way of saying, "i'm taking this all in, i'm learning."

I think it's, "this is weird, what do I do with my arms?"

You can't touch the ball with your hands, right!?

My Boy is used to a glove, pitching, and a bat.

His arms are a handicap in soccer.

Hmm...

The parents knew eachother too...from before.

No newbies to cling to.

I'm skeered.

He blocked a ball heading toward him with his forearms.

Quick reflexes or fear, or both?!

Coach did comment that he was FAST.

He's a good runner, there's a plus.

Though I do want him to run off the field and tell me he wants to play fall ball (baseball) or basketball.

But he won't, he will follow through.

And he likes it.

I'm still not-so-sure.

Well, it could be worse, he could be in tackle football.

*Shudder*

Now that's scary.

You are going to be a FABULOUS Soccer Mom!!! I have to say that it is such a fun thing to be! Connor starts his second season in a few weeks! You will learn the rules very quickly! I promise! We can be Soccer Moms together!!!!! I hope he enjoys it!

It could be worse. You could be searching for rib protectors on eBay for your 50 lb boy because your husband thought it would be FUN to have both his boys playing football.

    Yup, it could be worse.

You'll love soccer - Oldest is going on Season 3. We are on a new team this year as well - the older kids, a bigger field - serious business for 7-year-olds.

    I'm nervous.

    He's not.

    Typical.

Have fun!! Oh, but do you drive a minivan? It's a requirement for complete transition to Soccermomdom. No secret handshake without it.

My son is far too young for me to have to worry about this yet, but I must say that I do have very fond memories of watching my younger brother on the soccer field. It is a great, under-appreciated sport! I hope you fall into the roll of soccer mom quickly and end up loving it!

My daughter just got chosen for the travel soccer team..I guess I better adjust quickly to being a soccer mom. Good thing hubs is an athletic director and is familiar with all the sports.

Well... eventually you'll be one of those mom's who knows everyone and when you see a newbie mom, you'll make her feel comfortable :) It's another sport to put under your belt :)

I am not a good soccer mom. While I love that the kids get excercise, learn a sport, and gain an understanding in teamwork, soccer literally takes over our life in both the fall and spring. We only have two kids in soccer and it is a 4 day a week commitment and everything else seems to have to fit into the soccer schedule. In Colorado hubby was the youngest's coach, at least here we can just be parents. Maybe here they will only play fall soccer not spring and fall soccer. I can only hope!

You'll do great. I've never even done team sports, to I'm sure I'll be a horrible soccer mom!

soccer is way less dangerous than football.

my 5 year old will be playing her second season this year!

At that age, the little ones just run and kick. They try to get what I call "hokey pokey goals" because they put their whole selves in the goal!

    so cute!

Good luck with all of the new changes!! I just found out that Little Kong is not getting his teacher from last year, he is getting a new teacher...hoping for sanity here!

You will be fine, but you better tell him to get control over those arms or they will toss him in the box and he will be keeper and then you can sit on the sidelines with a barf bag because, he might not be scared but you...well YOU could die right there!

mmm, I might be speaking from experience, why do you ask?

    ;)

my 14 yr old has been playing soccer oh law...for almost 10 years now (how did I get that old?) and it gets easier.

just think, soccer season is MUCH shorter than baseball season!

    Oh Jen!

This is the perfect time for me to make a road trip and be there for you! I know the game of soccer. THAT I can help you with.

Now, being the 'newbie' of the Soccer Mom group? That's tough, no matter what sport your child is playing. I don't know what it is, other than adults remembering exactly what it felt like as the "New Kid In School", to bring out all of the insecurities of being the Newbie.

I bet you smile a lot. I bet you look incredibly supportive of your boy. Those are the traits that will pull you through, and are the most important.

    (Also...
bring the best snacks :-> )

You are going to be a great soccer mom. You will have a lot to blog about if you experience is anything like mine. There is a LOT of drama for us this year and the season hasn't really even started. We are newbies to the upper level soccer team. I don't know what they call it but it's more than recreational. They are pretty serious about training. The team moms - OH WOW! It's been interesting.

Luckily my son never got into soccer - I don't think I could deal. He is in football though - I was really nervous about it at first - but when I talked to his peditrician about it; she told me that football is actually safter than soccer because of all the pads. Both of her boys had broken bones playing soccer. Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't have told a new soccer mom that?? At any rate - soon you'll get into the swing of it. And if the boy loves it then that's all that matters.

Actually, I'm kinda glad out tiny town doesn't offer this sport.... but I know how you feel when your kid joins a new group, as if you've joined too, slightly unwillingly. Breaking into the parents club is hard, just talk to everyone, take pictures, and enjoy you boy!!

soccer is pretty big here in our area. My oldest is almost 16 and has been playing since he was 5. It is actually a great sport for kids; competitive but fairly safe (well expect some bumps and LOTS of bruises). I'm sure you'll enjoy and grow to love it when you see him pumping his arms as he runs down the field for a score, or stopping the biggest kid on the other team and stealing the ball from him.
