Two Dimes and a Nickel STILL Make 25 Cents

So it's a normal school night. The kids look in the cabinets and say in unison, "tomorrow is hot lunch day."

I didn't go shopping, sue me.

We're scrounging up money for two hot lunches and a snack and the following convo ensued....

DQ--I have fifty cents (2 quarters), can you help me find fifty more?
Me--Sure. (finding some Hubby's bedside drawers) Here you go.
DQ--What's this??
Me--Um...you're in fifth grade, you're scaring me.
DQ--I need 2 quarters.
Me--I just gave you fifty cents. 4 dimes and 2 nickels. Fifty cents.
DQ--They don't take that kind of money anymore.
Me--WHO doesn't WHAT?!
DQ--The lunchladies. They don't take that kind of money, I need quarters!
Me--You've got to be kidding.
DQ--Seriously mom.
Me--(getting out my fighting armor) I'm going to put this money in a baggie for you and slip my phone number in there. You give them that money and if they don't take it, tell them to call your mom!
Me--(under my breath) I'm gonna send 100 pennies next time just to piss them off telling my kid they don't accept small change....grumble grumble roar.
DQ--Okay if you say so.

We'll see if I get a phone call tomorrow.

Hubby is sure that DQ is just embarassed to take small change. That's crazy! Could it be true?!

Geez, they better take the coins you sent. And, if they don't, I definitely would send 100 pennies next time!

Nothing surprises me at schools these days...tell them to loosen their hair nets and give your kids their tator tots!

I would hate sending money each time and looking for money. Do they let them keep a paid account? Sounds like their lunch ladies are crabby patties :)

I would have sent the 100 pennies....

Or send shillings or something and really screw them up!

Jesus..who makes up these rules? Next time, send pesos. I'm sure every school in america takes Pesos.

Or maybe the lunch ladies are cranky witches who don't want to count all the dime and nickels versus quarters. Could be.

Think it is an embarrassment thing? All the cool kids are just tossing their quarters and dollar bills over the counter like gangstas, while poor DQ is sitting there counting out her dimes and nickels?? Come on Mom, find that little girl some quarters before her reputation is ruined!! ;-)

Good grief. I'm so pissed about EVERYTHING anymore about anything to do with school...so...yes. I could believe the lunch ladies said no more small change. It just goes right in line with the crap I've been deaing with. Ready to home-school with me, Jen?

  14. Krystyn @ Really, Are You Serious? said...

Okay, seriously, if they don't take nickles and dimes, I would be ALL over sending pennies! That's ridiculous. Like it takes that long to count it out.

That's crazy! We have snack Fridays, the last Friday of every month. The kids need to bring in 25 cents for snack. I sent in 2 dimes & a nickle once & Em told me they only accept quarters. I told her they'd take what I sent, or she wouldn't get a snack! Good grief!

Reminds me of the time I absolutely had to have a burger from Burger Kind. I didn't have a dollar so I scrounged up a bunch of change. The cashier had the nerve to holler at another employee, "Look at this!" I hated to give them small change but really needed that burger!

  20. Melissa said...

Yes, it could be true. My kids want bills, not quarters. If I mentioned pennies, they would completely die of embarrassment! It's a new world! Melissa

At my daughter's school, they have "money cards." Kind of like a debit card, you send in a check for whatever amount you want and they "load" that amount on to the card. My daughter refuses to actually pay cash for anything at school anymore, as she says it upsets the lunch ladies if you don't use the card. Puh-leeze.

Can't wait to hear the outcome of your 5th grade drama. I can totally relate (my daughter is in 5th grade, too).

  22. Tasha said...

AHAHAHAHA! Do the pennies thing! Do it! Do it! Do it! And then blog about it. LOL

  23. Lisa @ Boondock Ramblings said...

Umm...could you stop making your page look awesome? I'm starting to feel cruddy about mine. *sigh*

Anyhow, I agree with Tasha....do the pennies thing and blog about it. That would be seriously hilarious!

Hilarious!! My 6th grade daughter would have no qualms about small change if it meant food at the other end! :)

Um...what's with this music that comes on automatically? Don't you know it's a HUGE blogging design faux pas?

this so sounds like something I would have done to my mom when I was younger. The cool kids use QUARTERS mom!

    Money is money right......
I would send 100 pennies too but that is just me :)

I just wish our hot lunches at school were just a $1 at my kids school they are a FREAKING 3.25 a lunch. They don't get hot lunches very often, I could take them to Chick~fil~A for the price of a crappy school lunch,

The lunch ladies deserve the pennies, but you may just wind up on Jerry Springer one day with DQ! LOL

Too funny. Are they not going to feed a child b/c she has nickles & dimes?

Baby Girl likes to go in my purse & get "da-was". Way to early to start all that!

Thanks for the heads-up on the 5th grade homework. I'm screwed, my hubby's a farmer!

I heard that the penny would soon be obsolete if the American dollar continues to lose it's value- sounds like they already made it to your kids' school.

So funny! I would have done the same thing, which I am sure would have absolutely MORTIFIED my son.

  43. www.JusticeJonesie.com/blog said...

This is not surprising. My son kids don't even consider change money. NUTS! I make it a point to give them change, just for that reason!

  44. Jill said...

My girls have NO idea about the value of money... so anything small, round, and shiny is "the real deal" to them.

You must give an update as to what happened at school.

P.S. LOVE the music today! Brings me back to college!
